Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews entered the house near the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the explosion.

He thought the explosion had taken place on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
