Board Resignation
Summers announced he would withdraw from public roles after House committee released his regular communications with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

He remarked in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and look forward observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released messages demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it respected his decision to resign.

"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the directors," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This news comes after both chambers of the US legislature voted on this week to approve a measure that would compel the US justice department to disclose its records on the case.

The measure will afterward head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he expects to endorse the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following objections from his followers.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the legislative panel last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to link the academic to notable world leaders.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the wider community, he stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".

He added that he hoped "to restore confidence and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".

Career Background

The economist occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He led the university from five years and is still a academic there. When announcing his departure from public roles previously on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, verified that the economist was not affiliated with the institution.

He joined the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive the company leader.
