The England midfielder Needs to Drop the Petulance to Earn a Key Position With Manager Thomas Tuchel.

Should Bellingham hopes to earn his place once again into England’s top starting eleven, it would be smart to cut out the dramatics. His response when he saw that the substitute board was being shown after a match of inconsistency in Tirana fell short of expectations.

"I prefer not to make more out of it but I stand by my words 'attitude matters' and respect towards the players who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them as a player."

Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for an outburst. Harry Kane had just put England two goals ahead in a meaningless fixture, with only six minutes remaining and Bellingham, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for a foul on the Albanian striker. It was not a questionable change. Actually it would have been unwise for Tuchel to keep Bellingham on the pitch because it was possible Bellingham would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the tournament by getting a second yellow card.

Shifting Focus to Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s annoyance as he realized that his replacement was ready for a teammate. He threw his arms up and although he shook Tuchel’s hand after making his way to the touchline there was no doubt that the manager did not appreciate it.

This is the challenge that Bellingham must overcome. He praised his teammate for sending in the ball for Harry Kane to score his second goal, but everything else was harmful to his cause. It is not as if protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The German has stressed repeatedly respecting team hierarchies and the importance of showing proper conduct.

In the Spotlight

He, not included in last month’s squad, has been under scrutiny upon his return to the fold recently. Essentially his place has been in question and he has not done himself any favours with his response to coming off the pitch as the national team wrapped up a ideal group stage by defeating a spirited effort from Albania.

Tactics and Formation

As a result it's unclear on how the squad perform optimally including Bellingham. The evidence here was inconclusive. There was experimentation by the coach in the beginning. Under him, England have gained England structure and clarity lately, employing a holding player, a No 8, a playmaker and specialist wingers, but the approach changed against Albania. The young defender was handed his international debut, Adam Wharton was in the starting lineup at this level and the positioning of John Stones as an auxiliary midfielder created a similar look to City's team that won three trophies.

A Game of Two Halves

His performance was inconsistent. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze during the second half but frequently appeared overly eager to shine. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent early on. England's play was messy after halftime. One Albania chance resulted from Bellingham gave the ball away. The yellow card was shown after he was dispossessed by Broja and brought down the attacker.

Squad Strength Shows

Ultimately the squad's strength proved crucial. Tuchel introduced the Manchester City player, who appeared better suited to the position that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and the Arsenal winger. Later Saka provided a corner for Kane to break the deadlock. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks will play a key role in the upcoming tournament.

Connection Remains

Nevertheless, all talk was about Bellingham. The brilliance of Rashford's cross for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked in the ridiculousness of the player change. When the match concluded, everyone was watching Bellingham. Tuchel walked up behind him and guided Bellingham in the direction of the travelling England fans. The bond between them is not damaged. Tuchel hasn't decided to discard him at this stage. However, whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him a starring role is not guaranteed.
